Forged steel intermediate rolls are primarily employed in high-precision six-roll mills (and certain eight-roll mills), deriving their name from their position between the work rolls and the support rolls. Their principal function is to control the strip profile during the rolling process. Depending on the required hardening depth, materials such as 2% chromium, 3% chromium, 5% chromium, and semi-high-speed steel (SSH) may be utilised.
